We have all wanted some good rain, and now we've had so much, some people think we had too much! There could be lots more to come yet. A good wet season like this is great for sub-soil moisture for later in the season. I think you will find everything you plant this year will grow much better than the last few years.
If you still have vegies growing now summer's here, you must be doing a very good job.
By this time of the year, I try to have finished picking and have legumes planted. Hopefully have a good leaf cover so to keep the soil as cool as possible.
By now, I reckon your gardens are well under way and growing nicely after the wonderful rain. I would like to remind you to keep thinking that a plant doesn't have a stomach. So the soil does the digesting. We have to feed and look after soil, not the plant.
The most important things the soil needs are organic matter, minerals, microbes, oxygen, water, and small amounts of nitrogen. I am a great believer in keeping the soil in my garden (5 acres) tilled.
This time of year I am trying to beat the grass so I can put out our BD 500 soil spray. It's a great time while there is plenty of moisture in the soil, which is good for soil structure improvement and humus making.
Most of our vegie growing blocks are now waist high with grass and legumes and we are moving the cows around and feeding it off which is one way of making fertilizer for next year.
I am struggling to find a subject this newsletter so help me out here gardeners. What do you want to know about? Please let me know and I'll see what I can do.
